I probably don’t need to explain what rheumatism is — anyone who suffers from it knows it’s a painful, often unbearable condition, especially for older people. In my family, everyone seems to be affected by it in some form. Even my youngest son, who hasn’t even turned 40 yet, has started feeling the symptoms.
So, we do what we can to help ourselves — and I must say, it’s working, largely thanks to the vegetable garden at our countryside cottage. For several years, my spouse and I tried all kinds of medications. We went from one drug to another, each promising relief but delivering little. We tested every anti-rheumatic product we could find, suffering through it all with groans and sighs — until we finally gave up on pharmaceuticals altogether.

Determined to find a better solution, we turned to old books and folk remedies. And at last, we stumbled upon something that worked wonders. Not many people know how beneficial a homemade ointment made from black radish juice, vodka, honey, and salt can be for aching joints.
Here’s how to prepare the mixture:
- Take 1.5 cups of black radish juice
 - Add 1 cup of honey
 - Add ½ cup of vodka
 - Mix in 1 tablespoon of coarse salt
 - Stir the ingredients thoroughly until you get a smooth, uniform mixture

Massage this blend into the affected joints twice a day. You’ll feel the difference sooner than you’d expect!

Another very effective remedy is celery root juice.
- Finely chop the celery root
 - Take 1 tablespoon of the chopped root
 - Pour 1 cup of boiling water over it
 - Wrap the container and let it steep for 4 hours
 - Then strain the liquid

Drink 2 tablespoons of this infusion, 3 to 4 times a day, about 30 minutes before meals. You can also prepare the infusion using cold water — in that case, drink ¼ cup three times a day, also before meals.

And here’s an old German folk remedy that’s very easy to make:
- Take 20 grams of dried, crushed bean pods
 - Add them to 1 liter of water
 - Boil the mixture on very low heat for 2–3 hours
 - Let it cool
 - Strain it

Drink ½ cup of this liquid 4–5 times a day. Trust me — it brings great relief.
One more powerful natural remedy uses red bilberry leaves:
- Take 3–4 teaspoons of crushed red bilberry leaves
 - Pour 2 cups of boiling water over them
 - Boil the mixture in a covered, enamel pot using a steam bath for 15 minutes
 - Let it sit for 45 minutes and cool to room temperature
 - Then filter it through a four-layer cheesecloth or fine sieve

Drink ¼ cup 3–4 times a day before meals. Besides helping with rheumatism, this infusion is also beneficial for gastritis (with low acidity), diarrhea, and cystitis.
