For centuries, apricot pits have been used in traditional medicine due to their wide range of health benefits. Even in ancient Egypt, crushed apricot kernels were used to treat various ailments such as loss of voice (laryngitis) and digestive weakness. Today, modern science is slowly beginning to explore and confirm some of these benefits.

But what exactly makes apricot kernels so special?

Nutritional and Medicinal Compounds Found in Apricot Pits

  1. Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the body from oxidative stress. It slows down premature aging and supports overall skin health. By neutralizing free radicals, it contributes to the prevention of chronic diseases.
  2. Essential Minerals: Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorus, and Iron
These minerals play a critical role in strengthening the immune system and maintaining the body’s normal physiological functions. Thanks to the high potassium and iron content, apricot kernels may help combat anemia and support cardiovascular health.
  3. Iodine and Magnesium
These elements are essential for healthy thyroid function and brain activity. Regular intake can improve focus, reduce symptoms of hypothyroidism, and in some cases, help regulate high blood pressure.
  4. Unsaturated Fatty Acids
Unsaturated fats help muscles recover after intense physical activity. They are also vital for the health and appearance of the skin, hair, and nails, promoting elasticity, strength, and shine.
  5. Vitamin B17 (Amygdalin)
Perhaps the most controversial compound found in apricot kernels is vitamin B17, also known as amygdalin. Some believe it has anti-cancer properties by attacking cancer cells, although scientific evidence remains inconclusive. Nevertheless, it continues to be used in some alternative treatments.

Apricot Kernels in Traditional Remedies

Apricot pits are not only packed with nutrients but are also widely used in folk medicine for treating various health issues. Below are several popular remedies:

1. For Heart Arrhythmia

A traditional remedy for irregular heartbeat involves combining apricot kernels with lemon and honey:

  • Grind 0.5 kg of lemons using a meat grinder or grater.
  • Add 20 dried apricot kernels.
  • Mix with 0.5 kg of natural honey.
Let the mixture sit in a cool place for a few days. Take one tablespoon in the morning on an empty stomach and one tablespoon in the evening before dinner.

2. For Kidney Inflammation (Nephritis)

To alleviate nephritis symptoms:

  • Steep 30 grams of apricot kernels in 100 ml of boiling water.
  • Let it infuse for about 4 hours.
  • Consume the infusion three times a day before meals, not exceeding 65 ml per day.

3. For Parasite Elimination (Anti-helminthic Use)

Only raw apricot kernels retain the properties needed to fight intestinal worms. The recommended maximum dosage is 40 raw kernels per day. This amount should be divided into smaller portions and consumed throughout the day.

4. For General Heart Health

To improve overall heart function:

  • Crush 10 grams of apricot kernels.
  • Pour one cup of boiling water over them.
  • Let the mixture cool slightly and drink it like tea.
It is recommended to drink this apricot tea daily before going to bed.

5. For Bronchitis

Crush dried apricot kernels into a fine powder. Mix 3–5 grams of the powder into 200 ml of warm milk or tea. Drink this mixture twice a day. It may help soothe the respiratory tract and ease symptoms of bronchitis.

Note: While apricot kernels have many traditional uses, they also contain a compound called amygdalin, which can convert to cyanide in the body. Excessive consumption can be toxic. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any treatment involving apricot pits or other herbal remedies.
