As I got older, I began to feel a constant heaviness in my legs. They would swell easily, and I would feel tired after just a little bit of walking or standing. Over time, the veins on my legs became visibly enlarged and started to bulge. At first, it only happened during the summer, but eventually, the problem became more frequent — it started affecting me year-round.

Eventually, I was diagnosed with varicose vein disease.

The doctor advised me to wear compression bandages, walk regularly (especially in low-heeled shoes), and prescribed a few medications. While I followed the doctor’s advice, I wasn’t satisfied with just that. I began researching and looking for natural herbal remedies that could support my body and help reduce the appearance and discomfort of bulging veins.

After some trial and error, I discovered a few incredibly effective plant-based solutions. I’ve been using these remedies for several years now, and I’m happy to report that:

  • My legs no longer swell,
  • I don’t experience that heavy, tired feeling anymore,
  • And my veins are no longer painfully or visibly bulging.

Herbal Tea Recipes for Varicose Veins

Start by chopping and mixing 1 teaspoon of each of the following herbs. You can choose from one of these three herbal blends:

Blend 1:

  • Comfrey root
  • Elecampane root
  • Nettle (also known as stinging nettle)
  • Elderberry fruit or bark
  • Plantain leaves
  • Horsetail

Blend 2:

  • Birch leaves
  • Nettle
  • Clover flowers
  • Raspberry leaves
  • Dandelion root
  • Primrose root
  • Bean pods

Blend 3:

  • Blueberry leaves
  • Calendula (marigold) flowers
  • Blackberry leaves
  • Plantain
  • Horsetail

How to Prepare the Infusion:

  1. Take 2 tablespoons of your chosen herbal blend.
  2. Pour 1 cup (250 ml) of boiling water over it.
  3. Simmer gently for 10 minutes in a covered pot over very low heat.
  4. Pour into a thermos and let it steep for 6 hours.
  5. Strain and drink 100–150 ml before meals throughout the day.

For the first year, drink this herbal tea every day, and change the blend every 2–3 months. From the second year onward, continue drinking the tea daily but take a 10-day break every 1.5 to 2 months.

External Compress for Bulging Veins:

For additional relief, apply compresses soaked in a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) directly on the swollen veins. Leave the compresses on for about 20–30 minutes.

Tip: It’s best to make your own apple cider vinegar at home for the most natural and effective results.

My Homemade Ointment for Varicose Veins:

In addition to the tea and compresses, I also make my own healing ointment at home, which I apply directly to the affected areas.

Choose one of the following herbal blends for the ointment:

Blend A:

  • Nettle
  • Clover flowers
  • Dandelion root
  • Raspberry leaves
  • Wild thyme
  • Burdock root

Blend B:

  • St. John’s wort
  • Calendula flowers
  • Chamomile
  • Blackberry leaves
  • Coltsfoot
  • Wild rose (Rosehip)

How to Make the Ointment:

  1. Take 3 tablespoons of your chosen herb mix and pour 100 ml of boiling water over it.
  2. Simmer on low heat for 5 minutes, stirring continuously.
  3. Then add:
  4. 75 grams of melted pork lard (or substitute with shea butter for a vegetarian version)
  5. 75 grams of vegetable oil (like olive or sunflower oil)
  6. Stir well until fully combined and creamy.
  7. Store in the refrigerator in a sealed jar.

How to Use the Ointment:

Apply a thick layer of the ointment directly onto the bulging veins. Cover with two layers of gauze, then wrap with plastic wrap and secure with a bandage. Change the dressing three times a day.

Final Thoughts:

This herbal approach has significantly improved my quality of life. With consistent use, I no longer feel the discomfort, pain, or shame that I once did because of my varicose veins. I highly recommend trying this natural remedy — it’s safe, effective, and has truly changed my life.
