Potassium permanganate, commonly known as KMnO₄ or simply “permanganate,” is a dark purple crystalline powder. When dissolved in water, it turns the liquid purple—if used sparingly, the solution becomes a light pink, but when used in higher amounts, it produces a deep violet or purple color.

Thanks to its powerful oxidizing properties, potassium permanganate has long been used in medicine for a wide range of purposes, especially for its ability to eliminate infections and support the healing of skin and mucous membranes. Its versatility depends on how concentrated the solution is. Different concentrations serve different medical and hygiene-related purposes:

1. For Gastric Lavage (Stomach Washing)

In cases of poisoning or foodborne illness, a 0.01% to 0.1% solution (a very pale pink color) is used to wash out the stomach. The solution acts as a disinfectant and helps neutralize harmful substances. The patient drinks the solution and then is made to vomit, helping to remove toxins from the body.

Warning: Not all permanganate crystals always dissolve completely in water. Undissolved crystals can cause burns to the lining of the stomach. To avoid this, first prepare a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate. Then, only a few drops of that filtered solution should be added to a large amount of water. Always filter the solution before use.

2. For Wound Disinfection

To clean and disinfect open wounds, a 0.1% to 0.5% solution (moderate pink) is recommended. This kills bacteria and helps prevent infection while promoting healing.

3. For Burns and Ulcers

A 2% to 5% solution (dark purple) is used to treat burns, ulcers, and other skin injuries. Cold compresses soaked in this solution can be applied to the affected area. The stronger the burn, the higher the concentration needed. However, it should always be used with caution to avoid irritation.

4. For Infant Bathing

Most mothers and grandmothers know the traditional practice of adding potassium permanganate to a baby’s bathwater. A weak solution (very light pink) helps dry and soothe delicate skin, especially when dealing with diaper rash or minor irritations. It’s crucial not to add the raw crystals directly to the bathwater. Instead, prepare a diluted solution separately and add only a small amount to the bath, ensuring the final water is a light pink color.

5. For Eye Infections (Conjunctivitis, Blepharitis)

A weak solution of the same concentration used for infants is also suitable for washing the eyes in cases of conjunctivitis or blepharitis. Always ensure the solution is properly diluted and filtered to prevent any irritation or damage.

6. For Diarrhea and Digestive Issues

In the case of intestinal disturbances, drinking one glass of pale pink potassium permanganate solution in the morning and evening can help. Often, a single dose is enough to relieve symptoms of diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset.

7. For Bedridden Patients

When caring for bedridden patients, unpleasant odors can accumulate in the room. To neutralize the air, place a glass of lightly colored potassium permanganate solution nearby. It helps absorb and neutralize bad smells, creating a cleaner environment.

8. For Sore Throat and Mouth Infections (Angina, Stomatitis)

Gargling with a weak solution of potassium permanganate 4 to 5 times a day helps kill bacteria and promote oral hygiene. Be sure to spit out the solution after gargling and never swallow it.

9. For Sinusitis

For those suffering from sinus infections, a warm, light pink solution of potassium permanganate can be used to rinse the nasal passages. Gently draw the solution into the nostrils and let it flow out. Repeat this process 2–3 times daily to reduce inflammation and clear the sinuses.

Final Thoughts

While potassium permanganate is a powerful and versatile antiseptic, it must be used with care. Concentration and proper preparation are critical for safety. When used correctly, this simple purple liquid can be a highly effective tool for treating infections, soothing the skin, and maintaining hygiene at home.
